How long will it take to finish my basement?

From the time of signing the contract; and depending on the options selected and the size of the basement, it can take as little as five weeks or as many as eleven. Typically, a 1500 SF basement will take approximately six weeks. When you sign the contract we will discuss a guaranteed completion date.

How much will my basement finish project cost?

Prices of basement finishes depend upon options selected and the size of the space. Be wary about contractors who give out square footage prices over the phone. Precision will always give you a free estimate and consultation at your home after reviewing your space and expectations. Comparing apples to apples, we will meet or beat any competitors pricing.

Will you help move our contents?

Yes, Precision can provide additional labor to help clear the space for construction start.

Will finishing my basement add resale value to my home?

Home improvements provide a stable investment that is safe in a troubled market and it is an investment that is enjoyable every day. Adding additional bedrooms and bathrooms tend to bring the most resale value. Precision will help you design and build your basement for maximum return on investment.

What appliances are allowed within my basement finish project?

Nearly all appliances are allowed in basement finishes which include refrigerators, microwaves, dishwashers, disposal, direct vent gas fireplace, electric fireplace, additional furnace (rarely required), etc. Stovetops are generally not allowed in basements due to venting issues.

Is a permit required and how much does it cost?

Executing a permit is in your best interest for both re-sale value and safety. Your jurisdiction will inspect each phase of construction to ensure that code requirements are met. Each jurisdiction differs in the way they charge for permits. Some are based upon the value of the project and others the square footage. Precision is licensed and insured.

Will you provide a permit?

Precision is capable of providing a permit or working with the homeowner to assist in pulling the permit yourself.

What are the window requirements for my basement?

Every basement is required to have at least one egress window. Egress windows are large windows designed for fire escape purposes. When the window is below grade an egress window well with a permanently attached ladder is required. Many factors need to be considered for minimal size requirements for accessibility purposes.

Can egress be added to my older basement?

Egress windows can be added to older basements but typically require an engineers’ letter. This has been done many times.

Why should I use a General Contractor?

Can I do some of the work myself?

Precision encourages any and all homeowner involvement throughout the project. If you want to save money and perform some of the tasks yourself we are very willing to cooperate with you on your project needs. Precision runs a very tight back to back schedule and there are certain areas that require a licensed contractor to perform the work. If you want to perform some of the finish work, such as painting for example, we will discuss this option with you.

Can we provide some of our own material?

Precision will work with you wherever we can on your project. We have no objections to you providing your own material, but we will not warranty it.

Can I make changes to the project during the process?

This is your home and changes are a normal procedure and are expected. Precision is extremely detailed and dedicated to meeting all your expectations at the initial bid/contract stage to limit change orders. (Refer to our processes.) If there are changes, we will discuss alternate prices with you before we proceed. Many other contractors have a set mark-up on change orders; Precision is very fair and will work with you wherever we can.

Can you relocate my plumbing rough-in?

Plumbing rough-ins can be relocated. To save cost we recommend using as much of your existing rough in as possible, but dependent on your design, we can typically relocate the rough-in to your specific location.

Will you keep the job site clean?

Precision is very dedicated to maintaining a clean and professional working atmosphere. The construction process is very dusty at times, but we will clean up at the end of each day. We take additional precautions to keep dust and traffic minimized.

Can I still live in the house while the basement is being finished?

Absolutely, Precision will work to accommodate your schedule for the least disturbance possible. Depending on your schedule, some trade partners may work late nights and weekends.

How do you stock materials and access the home during construction?

The majority of materials are accessed through the basement windows on the side or back of the home. Certain larger items may have to enter through the inside of the main level, but we try to keep all access points as minimally intrusive as possible. In some cases, we have even poured concrete walkways to help pave the way. There have been many times that we have set up lock box access to the home for convenience purposes.

Can I still live in the house while it is being remodeled?

Absolutely, Precision will work to accommodate your schedule for the least disturbance possible. We stage our construction so that it is as least intrusive as possible while the majority of the house is still accessible.
